Scientific Name: Neoseiulus californicus
Common Name: Predatory Mite
Best Used:
As a preventative control in indoor grow environments and other sub-optimal conditions where temperature, humidity, or spray use might limit the effectiveness of other predatory mites. Neoseiulus californicus is well-suited to grow rooms due to its high tolerance for heat, dryness, and many common pesticides.
Targets:
Primarily spider mites (Tetranychus species), including the two-spotted spider mite. While Neoseiulus californicus shows a strong preference for spider mites, it will also feed on other soft-bodied arthropods such as thrips larvae, as well as alternative food sources like pollen. This ability allows it to persist longer in low-prey environments, making it ideal for long-term prevention strategies.
How It Works:
These mites are delivered in a breeder sachet that slowly releases predatory mites over several weeks. Each sachet contains all life stages—eggs, larvae, nymphs, and adults—ensuring ongoing pest control as populations establish. Adults and juveniles actively search plant surfaces for prey.
Instructions for Use:
Hang one sachet per plant or every 2–3 square feet, depending on infestation risk.
Leave sachets in place for a minimum of one month to allow for continuous emergence and sustained control.
Comparison:
Unlike Phytoseiulus persimilis, which is highly effective but fragile, Neoseiulus californicus is more robust. It can survive for longer periods when prey is scarce and provides broader environmental tolerance, allowing it to maintain control even in hotter or drier grow rooms. This makes it an ideal choice for preventative programs or as a follow-up after heavy infestations are knocked down.
