How to grow Microgreens without Substrate
1. Soak the Seeds
- Soak whole seeds for 8-12 hours in clean water.
- Calgary tap water works absolutely fine and you actually do want the chlorine in it. Chlorine helps kill the bacteria on the seeds.
- Drain and rinse them well to prevent mold.
2. Prepare a Tray or Mesh
- Use a perforated tray, fine mesh, or a hydroponic screen to hold the seeds.
- A wire rack, plastic grid, or mesh from a garden center works well.
- Ensure good airflow to avoid mold.
3. Spread the Seeds Evenly
- Place a single layer of soaked seeds on the tray.
- Avoid overcrowding, as it can cause rot.
4. Keep Moist & Dark for Germination
- Cover the tray with a lid or another tray for the first 2-3 days.
- Mist or lightly rinse the seeds 2-3 times daily.
- Maintain humidity but avoid standing water.
5. Introduce Light
- After 3 days, expose them to indirect light.
- Continue misting or rinsing with clean water.
6. Watering & Nutrients (Optional)
- Rinse daily with clean pH'd tap water or a diluted hydroponic solution.
- Most microgreens don't need many nutrients but can benefit from a kelp extract such as Mega Mass - Kelp Mii.
7. Harvest
- In 7-10 days, when they reach 3-6 inches, harvest by cutting just above the root line.
- Rinse and use fresh.
Tips to Prevent Mold
- Ensure good air circulation (a small fan helps).
- Rinse with cold water regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
- Use food-grade hydrogen peroxide (diluted) or a mild vinegar solution if mold appears.
